Free things to do in London

Updated Monday 12 October. 36 listings, checked this morning.

London is one of the best cities in the world to be skint in. The big national museums and galleries are free to walk into, the parks are open from early till dusk, and every night of the week there are free talks, gigs, comedy, screenings and late openings if you know where to look.

This page is the free half of Tap In London: everything we found this week that costs nothing to get in, from the venues’ own listings, checked this morning. Some free things still need a ticket, so look for “Free, book ahead” and grab one before they go.

Getting there

A lot of these are near Bond Street, Elephant & Castle, Euston Square, Hoxton and Peckham Rye. Every listing shows its nearest station and the walk from it, and the event page works out your journey there and home from any postcode.

Pay as you go with contactless or Oyster caps what you spend on fares each day, so a day of hopping between free museums never costs more than the cap.

Buses are a flat fare, and with the Hopper fare you can change buses within an hour without paying again. They’re often the cheapest way across town.
