Free exhibitions in London

Updated Monday 12 October. 41 listings, checked this morning.

London’s museums and galleries put on a constant run of free exhibitions and displays alongside their paid blockbusters, and the free ones are often the more interesting. You can walk in without booking for most of them, though a few ask you to reserve a free timed ticket.

Here’s every free exhibition we found, from the venues’ own listings and checked this morning. The ones closing soonest come first, so you don’t miss them.

Getting there

A lot of these are near South Kensington, Bank, Bond Street, Euston Square and Temple. Every listing shows its nearest station and the walk from it, and the event page works out your journey there and home from any postcode.

Many of the big free museums are close together: South Kensington has the V&A, the Science Museum and the Natural History Museum next to each other, and Bloomsbury has the British Museum, the British Library and the Wellcome Collection within a short walk.

Pay as you go with contactless or Oyster caps your fares for the day, so seeing a few in one day doesn’t cost more.
